November 23, 2009I have 1979 F350 with a 400M and a C6 transmission. I would like to put a Ford ZF 5 speed in it. I have done a lot research, and found it will work with the 460. Is there any reason why it wouldn’t work with a 400M. I know what all will have to happen with the swap.

August 25, 2010Just happened across your post, not that I can answer your question, but have a question of my own. Would you happen to know where I could get me a used ZF 5, 5 speed transmission pretty reasonably priced ? 1990 Ford F-250 4x4 with the 460 FI that I`m building. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
August 26, 2010well i just got done doing the swap and it went well. I looked for about 4 month before i found one in my area for a pretty good price. I found mine on craigslist, and found some on ebay to just not close enough to drive an pick it up. I also check the junk yards around, but they all wanted around a $1000 for them. I ended up paying $500 for the one I got, hope it helps. I also found a few place that do the reman transmission for $1100 as long as you have a core, i would have went that way but did not have a core.
February 18, 2011I just purchased a 1984 ford f250, it has the 460 on a 4speed maual, i would like to ask everyone about either putting in a 5 speed, or swapping the gears for higher ones....any suggestions
February 19, 2011I don`t think you will be able to gear your fourth gear higher. it will end up 1.00 ratio. If you put a Five speed in it will be 0.76 that will be your overdrive. For me it went from 2600 RPM at 55MPH to 2000 RPM at 55MPH. hope it helps
