November 10, 2010I want to buy a used daily driver for occasional towing. What would be a recommended "rule of thumb" on buying a diesel. I`m wanting to spend around $10k-$15k. The trucks I`m finding have mileage around 200K. Some lower, most around that number + or -. Knowing the truck has been taken care of, maintenance and all. What would be the maximum amount of miles that I should buy a diesel used? Any suggestions? Not buying right away, only looking right now.

November 10, 2010I got mine with 65000 from NJ. Had a plow on it but they must`ve taken it off. Runs great, just a quick " famous 6.0 " repair. Not the best mileage yet but she`s just breaking in I`m told.
For the $$ you want to spend you`re looking at around 100000 miles I think.

November 10, 2010i paid $12,000 for my 02 diesel with 143,000 miles on it. came with plow.
the 2000 5.4 was $3,500 with 12,000 miles on it, but needed work.
the shop truck is a 2001 diesel with 195,000 on it , and that was $6,500 with a plow.
November 10, 2010Thanks for the input. I found a few with miles like that too. My only question just to keep in the back of my mind is what would be the max miles I should buy on the diesel. Year model does not matter. I know a diesel can run just about a lifetime with proper maintenance.
November 10, 2010It hard to say really, because some people will take care of it and some of them don`t. But I just recently serviced 2000 powerstroke with 477k on it and it runs real good. He bought it new and had it since until now. So it really hard to find a good truck. For those powerstroke and people who took care of it and the engine can go for long time.
November 11, 2010The more you guys tell me, the more I see the 200k mark is not so bad. Then its just up to finding out what kind of condition the truck is in and if they really did maintain it.
March 3, 2011I bought my 1986 f-350 with 238000 miles on it and it runs great! But, it was very well taken care of. the body was redone a few years back and the engine was simply kept up on as far as maintenance, and she`s finally broke in at 250000 miles plus! So, good luck on your search!
