April 25, 2011Based on what you are saying, you have a bad cable somewhere. What you need to do is to locate the starter solenoid and then the post on it that runs down to the starter. Using a multimeter, measure the voltage at the post on the starter solenoid going to the starter. When attempting to start the truck, does this voltage go to 12 VDC, 11 VDC or somewhere down around 0 VDC? If up around 12 VDC, the cable between the starter and the starter solenoid is bad (can be proven by repeating this check using the post on the starter and if you get the same voltage, then the starter is toast, if down around 0 VDC, the cable is toast). If you are getting 11 VDC, then you most likely have a bad starter from out of the box. If you are getting 0 VDC, repeat the check using the battery side post. If as you are starting the truck it remains up at 12 VDC, you have a bad starter solenoid. If it drops to 0 VDC, you have either a bad cable bewteen the battery at the starter solenoid. You can prove this by measuring across the battery and noting the voltage of the battery.
If you need more info, let me know. Sounds pretty straight forward to get figured out.
